click! good dog!

My dog Su has taught me so much over the years. Su was just a little puppy wandering along a country road when I found her. I've picked up a lot of dogs and cats, and this one was to be no exception. It did not take long though to realize she was an exception in her own right. Su came with attitude. So much attitude the vet thought it would be wisest to euthanize her. I don't know enough about dogs to say what the problem was (and to a degree still is) for certain sure but this was a puppy who wanted things her way or no way. And she had the teeth to back it up. All was fine until you made any effort to restrain her or in any other way physically direct her path. Those puppy teeth were sharp! I think she sank them to the hilt in more than one person. Looking back it is amazing when you consider the rabies issue in Texas that we got away with keeping her anyway. She was a puppy. She was cute. I could not believe it was hopeless or 'too much work'.

Today, a long/short eight years later, I look at Su lying quietly on the den floor and think about how well behaved she is in the house, how sweet she is and okay, yeah, she's still not a dog to push around but she's a good dog and I tell her so every day. It's also been a whole lotta work. Yet it was worth it not just for the results (a good dog) but for all that I learned.

Some people are good at teaching, at training, whether it is an animal or a child. Naturals we might say. Some have studied and learned how to do a good job. But some? We expect so much, want it now, make demands, complain about non-compliance, but rarely seek new 'tools' to use that would help both sides have an easier time along with a better outcome. But no one had ever threatened to bite me before so there you go - I didn't learn until I had to or else!

So this is my plug for clicker training - a gentle positive way to modify an animals behavior and shape it to get the end results you desire. Yes, if you followed those links (and my personal favorite clicker site here, Shirley Chong's) you will see this "clicker training" is a way to relate to your dog resulting from concepts that can be used with people as well. I use a form of this in schools where I substitute - it is called tag teach. It grieves me to sub a class where some young child says, "I'll never earn a sticker", because he is a 'behavior' problem and has had only negative feedback. Sit down. Be quiet. Do your work. Pull your tag/write your name/lose recess. Whatever method is used in the class. Certainly there must be consequences for some actions. Yet too often that becomes our main focus. My focus is going to be rewarding the actions I desire - even if there is only the slightest move towards doing that thing, whatever it might be. In time you gain the behavior you want, whether from a dog, a lion, or a child.

There's not room here to tell all of Su's story, the issues we had and how I handled them (and we still train!). This is just to encourage you to search the 'net for these subjects and use them yourself.

It's spring.. when the air makes you want to get out and go places

like the Palo Duro Canyon. Here are two of my three, enjoying a bike ride to the "Lighthouse" a year or so ago. Someone told me once it is one of Texas's best kept secrets. I don't know about that but it certainly is a great place to visit if you like the outdoors. Plenty of walking and biking trails, at different levels of terrain, cabins and camping sites, horseback riding and even a few geocaches! There's nothing quite like waking up in the morning to see the sun come over the canyon rim, while cooking breakfast on the grill.

And then a pic of the youngest, as we take a break climbing
one morning.

Check this one out for a great vacation at a good price. If you don't
like camping, there is a nearby town with plenty of hotels.

(I would post the snake picture but some people don't like those. However, we never saw but two snakes in all the times we were there so don't worry about it.)

Lovely, lazy spring day

It was such a lazy day. I napped all afternoon then jumped up at five-ish to fix us some supper. Easy enough to pull out rice w/mushrooms, a sweet potato, chicken and mixed veggies. Usually I quit at that point but this time I went for broke - desert! Ah well, that was easy. If you are into tasty deserts that are simple try this one out - Pineapple Angel Food Cake. Not from scratch please. Keep it simple. Not high in calories either unless you eat all of it between two people in a sitting or two, like we do.

It was such a pretty day. The rose bush is putting out new leaves. John and I walked Su down to the quickstop for a newspaper after supper. We both wish the weather was like this all year round. It occurs to me it is the perfect day for lying in the hammock, thinking of nothing. In fact, I think I will....

It's spring fever.... You don't quite know what it is you DO want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!

Su and the coffee

You see this? It's Su, going nuts over a Starbucks Green Tea Frap. Well thinks John, how about coffee?

Now if I'd had things in focus you could see a pic of Su-dog lapping up Folger's Black Silk coffee laced with Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate and a bit of Demerara Cane Sugar....

Which leads us to photos that look more like this:

Crazy dog.. no focus left, LOLOL

end of day

and I am tired. Today has been a good day. The website is sufficiently ready to show to the site coordinator at the CWJC.

I'm thinking it would be good to learn more about websites and the making of them. The web is loaded with information, waiting to be used.

The house still has a slight odor of the bread cooked earlier. The leftover cabbage went well with it. I make no-knead bread which is so simple to make that it takes half the fun out of it. On the other hand, I make bread much more often.

To rest my mind I read a bit in an anthology of short stories by Orson Scott Card.
.....
oh this is funny. Apparently I went off to do something else, saving this as a draft. And never came back.. well that's okay. It was day's end and time to chill out (is that term still used?)

But here's a pic to go with.. doesn't this just look like an end of day picture?

Living lean and mean?

Okay... I was reading Frugal Dad and the latest entry is on saving just a bit over $14,000 in six months. Do what? This guest writer calls himself small-fry. So what am I? I can't think of a term to use for me seeing as that 14+ grand he will save in six months is nearly as much as I am going to live on in one year.

Sometimes it is so hard to take such sites seriously. At least for some of those I know. Surely there are more people out there living in 20 grand or so a year?

Then there is one person I know who has cried to me a few times about how little money she has to live on etc.. while I happen to know it is not far short of four grand a month. And she thinks that is doing without? Take home. House paid for.

I know, I know. Being broke is relative my husband always said. It is just hard to realize and accept I am apparently living at poverty level. So where are the articles on frugal living for me?

Hey, I can write one! How to save $140 in six months. Isn't that exciting?

Okay, so this is a bit of a downer. I just had to get it out of my system. I am poor! But life is good. Even if it is a bit hard sometimes to do things like - oh.. buy new carpet! Or a new (to me) car when this old one (13 yrs, 240,000+ miles) finally breaks down. But life is good. And most if not all of the small pleasures in life are free. I'm rich!

The end of this...

There were two trips to the Ukraine and many more pictures. Unfortunately, lack of following the Boy Scout motto and an unexpected hard drive crash meant a lot of lost photos. I'll leave this up a while or so, who knows. Fond memories!

End of March

March comes to an end.. goes out like a lamb they say? Maybe as there are a few more days. Yesterday it rained and even hailed a tiny bit. Otherwise the days here in West Texas (yes, I finally got home mid-March) are beautiful. Temps in the mid-70's most of the time so we have neither heat nor air on, rather doors and windows open. Cats and the dog come and go as they please to their delight.

I have been busy since coming home with the Christian Women's Job Corps and a few other things. Helping them out a little bit and working on a web site for them with the (major) aid of my son John.

Su is happy I am here and ready to play! Or go for long walks down by the river.

March

And on to Ohio.. for a while. Enjoying the visit with my daughter, caching, running around town to see the sights or shop. We went tea crazy and now have enough to keep us in hot tea for a long time. I like this area with the picturesque main streets in the townships we have visited, the streams and trees, nice walking/biking trails scattered around long said streams.

And I dare say the cats have enjoyed an extra person to snuggle up to on chilly nights.

February??

Where did it go? Passed right on by with days of hanging out with mom. Sitting on the sofa watching TV, maybe some housecleaning, grocery shopping, eating out. Big doings! But the end finally came and when my daughter passed through I climbed into her car to head south then north with her.

Mom is doing great! Handling being alone just fine.

Pictures? There were a few pics but probably not anything worth printing. No big snow. No good shots of the cardinals. No sight of the beaver at the pond. No trips!! And after all that talk of Florida in the winter or a cruise. However we had a nice month and now I am heading back to dog and cat hairs in West Texas after a few more days in Ohio.

January '09, SC and snow!

Okay, so not a lot of snow but it is the first snow of this winter for me! I walked back to the pond early this morning and got this photo. The beavers were not out but I could see their trails in the snow. It is warm enough that I doubt we will get any accumulation. Still, there is enough that the cardinals at the feeder are nicely contrasted and pretty to watch.

Fall of 08

Dad died last month. I went home for the funeral and stayed with mom a while after. We made a trip to the mountains, hoping a couple of days away would be good therapy for her. I've never been much on blogging but now less than usual.

There goes Fela!!

Good grief. I opened the cat pen door and Fela zoomed out. Straight to the tree. John, having just been taking photos of a certain spider, was ready with his camera. From where he stood however, this was all he could see. So he took like fifteen shots of Fela butt. Silly boy.

Meanwhile, I am up under the tree (I know spidee territory, which is probably why John was NOT under the tree) and I called him, so he got This shot. Happy Fela on the end of the dead limb. This is about as high as she can go as the tree is somewhat truncated. She knows if she tries for another limb it will put her within reaching distance. So she looks and thinks... for quite a while. Then the temptation is too much. She makes a dash for it!

Grabbing one leg, I started pulling. Fela resisted mightily. What she was saying while this was going on is absolutely unprintable. If you did not know better you'd have thought I just grabbed a wild cat not a spoiled housepet. Wait a minute, maybe spoiled housepet does fit. After all, she was sure she should have what she wanted and was madly cussing me out for not letting her dash up the next tree branch.

I win. More of Fela comes out of the tree. I slowly pulled her so she went over my shoulder. Fela hung over my shoulder limply, resigned to her fate. Back inside we went with the "I wanna be free!" cat.

(meanwhile, the car door was standing wide open, amazing no one 'freed' the goodies inside!)

Look at that!

What a sight, late at night, coming through the gate into the backyard. Now I think she's lovely and interesting. John on the other hand, was not so amused at nearly walking into Ms. Spider but he did grab his camera for a few fast shots. Now at one point, the spider jumped and John jumped too. It was a small matter of a stick.. how was I to know she'd object so? I really didn't flick her off or poke her hard. Just doing my bit to help him get a more exciting shot. Let me tell you, that boy can jump! (but the spider jumps better I must say.) How frazzled was he you ask? Well the next morning I went out to walk the dog and was shocked to see his car door standing wide open! I was so sure he'd been robbed. I ran back in the house and woke him up. It was not a good start to his day I'm thinking, based on his initial response. However, it turned out that he'd left the car door open all night! Everything was still there, surprisingly enough considering it was right by the street. Whew! I told him that spider meet-up really blew his mind. He says it wasn't so. It was the decaf coffee. Hmmm?

I don't care John. I still blame it on the spider trying to get a close up of YOU.

(wondering what he will say in *his* blog)

Temptations

We all have our small weaknesses right? Mine is bread. Everything about bread is wonderful.
The feel of the dough as I knead it, the smell of it cooking (when my nose is working anyway) and of course, the finished product. If it weren't for fresh bread I might even be losing weight!

Hot bread, butter (the real deal!) and local honey makes a treat that my mouth just waters for.

Round is easy but I have a rectangular cloche that has been crying out for use. Finding a cloth cradle for French bread at a thrift shop, making it mine took no thought at all. Now we know, the next loaf won't be a round one!

Check out Breadtopia, Farmgirl Fare (a year in bread) and No Knead bread so you can start
baking too!

Realizations

according to my son, http://blog.johnkotrla.com/2008/05/01/a-startling-realization/, I have this thing about birkies. I don't know why he'd blame me for his birkie fixation.

Look - there's obviously room there for another pair (the dog ate one pair) and more sneakers.. wait, there is another pair of sneakers somewhere. And I think there's a pair of birkie's missing... oh yeah, they are on my feet.

Eat your greens!

Every time I make a salad, here comes Beeky. It won't do for me to give her a piece of lettuce. Oh no. She must help herself to the piece of her choosing, off my plate. A few nibbles and she's done, I can have the rest. At least she's neat, doesn't nose around in the whole thing trying to choose, she's fast to pick one piece at the edge and sticks with that. Some folks at those food bars in eating establishments could take a few cues from her!

my old friend

my old friend is in the hospital, has been now since the end of February. Well there was an almost two week stint in the Skilled Nursing Facility of said hospital but.. pretty much seems all the same to me. She is so dear to me. This is a hard time for both of us in very different ways. Since she went in to the hospital my good friend's mom and one relative have died. It's been a tough spring. It doesn't seem like it has been nearly 24 years since I met this old lady. She has been more a part of my life than I realized prior to her illness. Hospital staff wonder at my being there, at taking the part I do and can't seem to understand how close you can grow to someone who is not family. She was there for me when my husband died. I was there for her when her husband died. There's never a week that has passed that if I am not on vacation, I wasn't at her house at least twice and maybe five times. It is an odd thing in life, how you make a casual aquaintance (I bought a goat from her) and somehow it develops into a lasting relationship that deeply impacts both lives. You never know it seems, who it will be or why. I would not have thought this lady would be such a part of my life 20 something years ago. Such an age difference, and we did not really do anything together past the goats. Just sat, drank coffee, talked. And that was enough.

My friend died a few days after her 85th birthday. Bye second mom.. I loved you.

A walk in the park

We went caching in the San Angelo State Park New Year's weekend. Suza loved the hike but it wore her out (me too!) so once home she curled up in her chair and snoozed soundly.

.............................
After chasing around town to vets, groomers etc, we found plenty of ads for other lost dogs but not the two we picked up earlier. Finally located a rescue group that still had room - so many fill up at this time of year. So all ends well, from my point of view at least!

Fela's Poinsettia

Fela loved this poinsettia for the whole 12 hours it was here. She'd stick her nose into the middle of the plant and inhale deeply. Then drool. I'd have expected her to chew on it, but nope!

More dogs!

Dogs dogs dogs! We went out to the state park to ride bikes and found dogs running loose on the highway near the gate of the park. Of course we had to pick them up! One is a Westie we think, the other a cocker, maybe mix. Both are nice, young, and need grooming

Fritti's gone

It was tough but yesterday Fritti Cat was put to sleep. He could not get well from what should have been a simple upper respiratory ailment. The FIV was showing its ugly head and since there is no good end to this, we decided to say goodbye now.

See ya at the bridge Fritti baby!

Cats and elbees

or litterboxes (LB you see).. so many of them with so many cats! Litter gets pulled out onto the floor, as every cat owner knows. The boxes built into a cabinet have long appealed to me but getting someone to make one seems to be beyond my ability. Then recently I saw a cat box at the store that looked interesting but the price tag! It was right at 32 dollars. The design appeared easy enough to copy. I picked up an 18 gal storage container and some outdoor carpeting. Cut a hole in the top and glued on the carpet (to help catch litter). Voila! A new box! Large and deep, the cats took right to it. While there is some litter on the floor still, it is a tiny amount indeed. This is so successful and economical that I'm changing over all the boxes to this design. Here is Fela (the tabby stray who was unnamed yet in her last photo) checking out the new box.
